Paul Auster, who, as it happens, wrote one of the most amazing dog books ever, has had a series of recent tragedies that I just read about. His son was charged with manslaughter in the death of Auster's granddaughter, then the son died of an overdose, and now Auster has been diagnosed with cancer.
