I just started watching New look ( I thjnk it's called ) with Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel and it made me want to read more about the resistance and nazi occupied Paris. Quite niche but anything spring to mind?

I’ve just finished The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah which is about exactly that!

House of Glass by Hadley Freeman. Non-fiction, family history including the time during WW2.

Fair Stood The Wind For France by H E Bates. A novel set during the war, an RAF pilot shot down and in hiding in France.

Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky - novel set during WW2 in France.

FrancescaContini · 25/02/2024 11:47

Agree with Fair Stood the Wind for France - it’s a compelling read.

Can you google for some French writers?

Les Parisiennes by Anne Sebba. Non fiction

MrsPringledusts · 25/02/2024 12:40

Village of Secrets by Caroline Moorehead - Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, located in the mountains of the eastern Massif Central helped to save many Jews during WW2. A most interesting read

Non fiction but Mission France by Kate Vigurs is a really good read.

PollyOrange · 25/02/2024 13:15

Have a look at Charlotte Gray by Sebastian Faulks.

Also The Whalebone Theatre by Joanna Quinn (starts with the main characters as children but features the war and the Resistance later)

Restless by William Boyd.

And I agree Suite Française is brilliant. And so sad when you learn about the author's own story.

Sisters of the Resistance - Christine Wells

Loads of good recommendations here. There's also The Girl Who Fell From The Sky by Simon Mawer and Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein- both very good.

‘Marianne in Chains’ is a non fiction account of the Loire Valley during the Occupation . I used to live in one of the main towns featured in the book, and elderly residents said it was pretty accurate.

A Life in Secrets by Sarah Helm - about the woman - Vera Atkins - who trained agents for the SOE’s French operations, and how she tried to find out what happened to those who went missing

lavenderlou · 26/02/2024 19:28

Came on to recommend Charlotte Gray by Sebastian Faulks too.

Best book I've ever read!

Non- fiction, Thé Resistance by Matthew Cobb, very good.

memoir Moondrop to Gascony by Anne Marie Walters.

2mummies1baby · 27/02/2024 20:43

This is about the Dutch Resistance rather than the French Resistance, but Tamar by Mal Peet is very good.

dreamingofsun · 27/03/2024 15:28

Citadel by kate moss was about french resistance. i wouldnt have chosen it as its not my usual type of book but someone leant it to me and i really enjoyed it

BlueGlassOfDoom · 27/03/2024 15:37

A Treachery of Spies by Manda Scott - a novel in which the investigation of a murder in Paris links back to the Resistance.

GetWhatYouWant · 27/03/2024 20:29

A Quiet Courage by Liane Jones. Non fiction about some of the astonishingly brave women of the SOE dropped into occupied France and what happened to them.

MiniFig · 28/03/2024 10:58

I keep forgetting to check this topic.
