I’ve just finished this and LOVED it, didn’t want it to end.

I enjoyed Tipping the Velvet, didn’t get on with The Paying Guests, but this was fantastic!

Loved how the 2 main female protagonists’ stories evolved, how they both bore terrible brutalities at the hands of so many.

The way the nurses at the mental asylum treated Susan!! I wondered whether they were the same nurses who loved and nurtured Maud as a young child.

I really didn’t want it to end and am now bereft!

Have you seen the bbc dramas of this and tipping the velvet? Brilliant!

Such a good book!

The only thing that puzzled me was at the very end when Susan asks Maud what she’s writing about and she says something like (I dropped the book at my Mum’s today so I don’t have it to refer to)...I’m writing what I want to do with you....I wondered she was referring to the erotic literature she had been bought up around?? Or whether she’d been writing declarations of love to Susan.

It doesn’t really matter, just wondered what people’s take on it was.

I remember the first time I read Fingersmith. It was getting late so I thought I’d finish the chapter and go to sleep - but it was the chapter with the big twist and I ended up finishing the book, then needing a lot of coffee the next day.

highlandcoo · 31/01/2024 08:45

There's a sort of double twist isn't there? I remember being so surprised at the time .. it was before twists in books became incredibly common. Now you're almost expecting them.

It's a long time since I read it .. can anyone remind me?

Divebar2021 · 31/01/2024 08:50

I read it a long time ago and absolutely loved it. I’m scared to re visit it in case I don’t enjoy it as much. I can remember recommending it to my mum and she brought it to read on a holiday in Canada. We were in this cabin in the mountains and she was shouting me from the bedroom “ OMG….. I can’t believe such and such has just happened” Happy memories 😀

I've had this sitting on my nightstand for months but I keep finding other things to read. You've all inspired me to crack on with it!

The best thing you can do right now is hide this spoiler thread until you’ve read the book. Seriously.

Wtf happened to Sarah Waters? Is she still a writer?

MissAmbrosia · 01/02/2024 11:29

It's an amazing book. I remember being open-mouthed at a couple of points as the twists are incredible.

highlandcoo · 01/02/2024 11:52

@MorrisZapp I'm sure someone mentioned on here that she has a new book coming out before too long
