Lucy Mangan - Bookworm - anyone else read?

BookWorm45 · 21/01/2024 08:55

Came across this recently, its subtitle is "A Memoir of Childhood Reading". Clearly Lucy Mangan has read many similar items to me as a child and this book was a lovely way to remind myself of how important these books were to me.

Anyone else read it ?

Yes, it’s lovely!

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 21/01/2024 10:30

Yes it gave me such warm nostalgic memories of my childhood reading. A really lovely read.

ColdButSunny · 21/01/2024 10:31

I loved it too.

AtomicBlondeRose · 21/01/2024 10:31

I really liked this book, and yes, it felt like an encapsulation of my own childhood. Lovely.

Wbeezer · 21/01/2024 10:31

I have, really enjoyed it, in fact I might read it again now you've reminded me!

ChessieFL · 21/01/2024 10:32

Yes, also loved it. Lucy’s childhood reading was very very similar to mine so it brought back some lovely memories.

Ellmau · 23/01/2024 08:35

I loved it too.

Oh I saw this on the library catalogue and fancy it, OP! I was a right wee Bookworm and need a bit of nostalgia at the moment ! Thanks for the recommendation!

SpikeWithoutASoul · 23/01/2024 08:50

Yes. Loved it all. Reminded me so much of my own childhood. Ramona forever!

akissbeforebed · 23/01/2024 08:51

I'm going to buck the trend here and say I didn't think much of it, in fact I didn't finish it. It felt like a series of school essays. I wanted to give each chapter a grade.

LoreleiG · 23/01/2024 08:54

I loved it - it brought back so many reading memories. A lot of those books are still on my shelf or at my childhood home.

MapleSyrupWaffles · 23/01/2024 08:56

Yes - it was a total description of my childhood, too.

EBearhug · 23/01/2024 08:58

Much of my childhood reading, too, though having previously read her stuff in the newspaper, this didn't surprise me.

JoanOgden · 23/01/2024 08:59

My childhood too! Lots of books that I know really well. I was also v happy to be reminded of Gwen Grant's book, which I loved at primary school but have never seen since, so had totally forgotten the name of the author and book titles.

Thecompleteposter · 23/01/2024 09:30

Yes, we also read it for my Book Group at my suggestion. It is always good to have a fellow bookworm to scavenge ideas

MuddledMadge · 23/01/2024 09:50

Yes, I loved it. I read Private, Keep Out! by Gwen Grant, for the first time, as a result of this book. I loved that too.

If you liked Bookworm you might like:-

Fierce Bad Rabbits: The Tales Behind Children's Picture Books by Clare Pollard

I found this really interesting.

I tried to read The Child That Books Built by Francis Spufford, thinking it would be like Bookworm. I didn't really enjoy that one though..

I’m afraid this just reminded me why Lucy Mangan irritates me. She’s just a little bit too much of a goody two shoes for my taste.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 24/01/2024 20:33

I loved it! It's a while since I read it but I loved it so much I bought it for several close friends/family the following Christmas

Santasbigredbobblehat · 25/01/2024 07:19

Loved it.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 29/01/2024 20:10

I loved it.

BUT, there are bits in it which made me (and other readers on the 50 books threads) question whether or not all the books had really formed part of her childhood reading, or if she'd included them because she thought that they should have been on her list.

Her age when she said she read some of them just doesn't fit- I'm the same age as her and there were definitely books she said she'd read that she'd have been much too old for, (I "tracked" her almost book for book until she got to a certain age, but then she seemed to span another generation completely. And there's something she says that's just plain wrong about the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe which made us all think she had neither read it or seen the film!

I'm 51 and I've never stopped reading children's books in between other stuff. Today, I was reading KM Peyton.

Yes, me too. That's not what I mean.
She talked about her own age when she got into reading certain authors, which didn't fit with how old she said she'd been when reading others.
I can't remember now, it was some years ago, but I know several of us on the thread thought it. I'll have to dig my copy out and check.

Ooo I loved it but what bit about TLTWATW?

LoreleiG · 30/01/2024 12:40

I’d like to know too! I didn’t notice the error but then I wasn’t the biggest fan of those books.

LoreleiG · 30/01/2024 12:41

Also what the books were that weren’t in the right date order!
