Something like American Dirt for DSD?

ianshe · 20/01/2024 16:29

I bought my DSD (17yo) American Dirt for Christmas and she absolutely loved it and is now asking for more recommendations. She is French but read it in English as her English is brilliant, usually she is reading all the Colleen Hoover books so I wanted to gift her something a little different. Gripping but not too difficult to read.

I was going to buy her Khaled Hosseini a thousand splendid suns BUT I think the language might be a little more difficult

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

TIA

Demon Copperhead or the Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, gritty but excellent or Bridsong by Sebastian Faulks is always good.

I think some of the recommendations from PP are quite challenging. And definitely not A Little Life unless you've read it yourself and think she would be able to handle it. (I have teenage DDs - one loved it, one would be devastated by it).

Memoirs of a Geisha is a good shout.

Where the Crawdads Sing
The Vanishing Half
How to Kill Your Family
Notes on an Execution

All good contemporary fiction by American writers.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I forgot about where the crawdads sing. I think that's a good shout for her. And it's been years since I read Memoirs of a Geisha, you've inspired me to re-read it !
She's having quite a hard time at the mo for various reasons so I want to read through before giving to her to avoid any triggering subjects (her dad is v poorly with cancer and she is currently in a residential hosp for eating disorder)
She really loved American dirt though, she's got 100 sticky notes poking out the pages marking all her favourite parts, love her Grin
