If you could have any character from a book as your best friend who would you choose?

OP posts:

Lizzie Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. She's funny, kind, brave and loyal. I once heard an old literature professor say "I've been in love with Lizzie Bennet since I was 15." Bless him.

Bertie Wooster from the Jeeves books. Kind, witty, self-mocking and endlessly cheerful. He's also quick to forgive and wishes everyone well. Above all he's happy. The littlest things fill him with joy.

I think I'd also like Sally, from Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. Oh, and Anthony Blanche from Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. I'm not sure either would be loyal or reliable, but they'd be entertaining.

Possibly Lord Henry from Wilde's Dorian Gray. I also love Mr Scogan From Aldous Huxley's Crome Yellow (he was based on Bertrand Russell). Lord Henry, Mr Scogan and Anthony Blanche are all superb talkers. It would be amazing to meet them for a coffee and listen to them rattling away.

Are you telling me they aren't already my friends, OP? 😱

I'd quite like to be friends with Agatha Raisin.

Herbert Pocket, Ralph Touchett, Prue Sarn, Lucy Snowe.

I would love to know Hercule Poirot but I think best friend status might be a bit much. Many of Marian Keyes’ characters would be ideal friends, or even Marian herself. Similarly with a lot of Maeve Binchy characters.
Also would love to be a member of the Thursday Murder Club but think I’m too young, would have to work there.

Elizabeth Bennet, of course!

Sand Dan Glokta from Joe Abercrombie's first law trilogy and Monza Murcatto from Joe Abercrombie' Best Served Cold. I'm a bit obsessed with his books at the moment.
Both characters survive against all odds and refuse to let the horrible things done to them define them. Also Monza dedicates herself to vengeance. I love vengeance.

Anne Elliot from Persuasion. Whilst I love Pride and Prejudice, I think I have more in common with Anne and we'd be good friends.

Heathcliffe

What’s the appeal in a friend who can’t cope with you marrying someone else, then marries your dimwit SIL to annoy your husband, beats her up and impregnates her, mauls you on your deathbed while you’re heavily pregnant, kidnaps your daughter, then digs up your dead body?
