Does anyone have any good recommendations for fiction set during the civil war please? I've exhausted the Tudors. The wars of the Roses etc. (history literature is my guilty pleasure reading wise Grin)

How about The Leviathan by Rosie Andrews? It's a bit spooky but covers the period and is an unusual read

As Meat Lives Salt is set during the Civil War.

Miranda Mailins "the puritan princess". It's a fiction about Oliver Cromwell daughter. Very good x

The King’s General. Daphné du Maurier

Actually set during the Protectorate era but they are so good.
The Seeker by SG MacLean, there's a series of 5 books. Really really good period setting and characters and just evoking the whole Stalinesque state that England was back then.

These are such good books!

The Rider of the White Horse - Rosemary Sutcliff (old, though not as old as the du.Maurier, and very well written)

Bohemond23 · 22/11/2023 15:15

Children of the New Forest

Pamela Belle's Wintercombe series of novels are OK - they go as far as the Monmouth Rebellion.

HelloandGoodMorningPlease · 22/11/2023 15:23

I have almost finished Wintercombe by Pamela Belle and it is brilliant. It is my first English Civil War novel and it is so detailed. I love the descriptions of the food, medicines and gardens and village life.

Just after Civil War but Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris is very good.

Wife to Mr Milton

Have you read Sharon Penman? Her Plantagenet novels are very good.
When Christ And His Saints Slept
Time and Chance
Devil's Brood
Lionheart
Kings Ransom

and her Welsh trilogy which is set roughly around the same time and are my favourite books ever,

Here Be Dragons
Falls The Shadow
The Reckoning

Staticgirl · 22/11/2023 16:47

I echo the Seeker recommendations. They're really good.

I have just read The Swift and The Harrier by Minette Walters which was really enjoyable.

RomanMum · 22/11/2023 16:49

Rebels and Traitors - Lindsey Davis. Better known for her Roman whodunnits, this is set during the Civil War and isn't a mystery.

whatfreshheck · 22/11/2023 16:59

The shardlake series is really really good. Not civil war though. Tudor.

piscofrisco · 22/11/2023 19:51

Amazing! Thankyou all! The only one of those I've read is the Daphne Du Maurier one. That lot will keep me going over Christmas and beyond!

You need the Kingmaker series by Toby Clements. Absolutely unbelievably brilliant.

highlandcoo · 22/11/2023 20:27

I enjoyed Act of Oblivion too.

A fictional reimagining of the true story of two of the men who signed the king's death warrant. They later fled to America and were sheltered by the Puritan community, while being relentlessly pursued to be brought back to England for trial.

Fernticket · 22/11/2023 20:38

The sunne in splendor. I think it's by Sharon Penman. Set during the Wars of the Roses. Really good

PurpleBugz · 22/11/2023 22:39

Philippa Gregory does some awesome books on the wars of the the roses which is just before tutor times.

Also Ken follet writes amazing historical fiction. Pillars of the earth is the best I've read. Wrong time period but you should try
