DD16 is looking for book recs. The only stuff she’s loved is Jeanette Winterson but when she’s asked in bookshops for similar she keeps being directed towards much lighter stuff (same sex YA romance) some of which she liked but it’s not really what she is looking for.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin is fantastic although general LGBT rather than lesbian specifically.

Everything written by Sarah Waters is fabulous.

I'd also recommend Miriam Margolyes' very funny autobiography in which she writes about coming out.

Sarah Waters, of course, and Bernardine Evaristo's Girl, Woman, Other.

Kate Davies' In at the Deep End is lighter but really good.

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdale is great. Graphic novel.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker.

The Adventures of China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara

There's some nice lesbian stories in Emma Donoghue's collection Touchy Subjects

Emma Donoghue is a great lesbian writer. Her most well known book is Room, which doesn’t have a lesbian theme, but many of her books do. (Room is really good, though.)

Betsy Cornwell does some wonderful lesbian/queer YA fiction.

Emma Donoghue’s latest book Learned By Heart is a lesbian romance about the schooldays of Anne Lister, of Gentleman Jack fame. Set in early 19th century. It’s quite steamy in parts but nothing a 16 year old wouldn’t cope with.

Neon Roses by Rachel Dawson is an excellent new release, but you'll have to wait a little bit for it to come out in paperback. Very Welsh, very 80s, very lesbian.

I’ve recently read:

Mrs S by K. Patrick

Really highly impressive novel. Written from the pov of a visiting Australian member of staff at a girl’s boarding school in England. The writing is muscular and sublime - haven’t read anything quite like it before.
