I fancy a good Haunted House read

I've read This House is Haunted and Haunting of Hill House and a couple of others that I can't recall right now.
Any others I should read?

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It’s a ghost story set in a house. From memory, it’s more a suggestion of a haunting than a detailed account of the paranormal. I am very suggestible so it freaked me out but you might be made of sterner stuff!!

GigiAnnna · 24/09/2023 14:00

Have you read The Whistling?

cherryassam · 24/09/2023 14:09

Bone China by Laura Purcell if you like Gothic style

Hell House by Richard Matheson is a classic as is Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco

I read The Hacienda by Isabel Canas recently - it’s described as Rebecca meets Mexican Gothic. Enjoyable but not as good as either Rebecca or Mexican Gothic. Mexican Gothic has a bit of a haunted house feel come to think of it - I enjoyed that too.

I've read The Little Stranger. It was a good read but I was hoping for a bit more to happen!

I haven't read the others. Off to browse.

The Woman in Black is a classic haunted house read.

InterstellarDrifter · 24/09/2023 14:26

The Woman in Black is a fab book which I've already read Smile Thanks got the suggestion.

I’m going to start Testimony. It’s what Danny Robin s’ The Witch Farm was based on. Was out of print when the radio series came out but is back on Amazon now I believe.

InterstellarDrifter · 24/09/2023 14:30

The Whistling looks really good! It was 99p on kindle so bought it. Thanks @GigiAnnna

@GigiAnnna who is the author of The Whistling?

OP, how about House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski?

InterstellarDrifter · 24/09/2023 14:32

@MrsSkylerWhite the witch farm was excellent. I'll check out your suggestion.

Author is Mark Chadbourne

Haunted by James Herbert. A beautifully written very atmospheric book with a twist you will not see coming. The ghosts of Crickley hall is good too.

The Amityville horror by Jay Anson. Although this all has been debunked, if you take it as a work of fiction, its still utterly terrifying.

If you like Danny Robins type ghost stories, try The South Shields Poltergiest by Darren Ritson. The ( supposedly) true story of a young family and the violent haunting in the their home. Its one of the most well documented cases of poltergiest activities ever recorded. Excellent read.

futuremoneyinbank · 24/09/2023 14:45

I picked up Moat HIll Hall (new author) the other day and found it enjoyable - it's an easy read with a few good twists.

futuremoneyinbank · 24/09/2023 14:47

Moat Hill Hall was by LK Pang (had to find it to check the author).

Not a haunted house, but a haunted mountain.

Thin Air by Michelle Paver, I always recommend this when people ask for good horror books, it stayed with me for days when I first read it. Also Dark Matter by the same author.

Yes - both genuinely chilling and very well written. Dark Matter is truly frightening and Thin Air is so haunting (no pun intended).

Sportycustard · 24/09/2023 15:05

Agree about Dark Matter. Scared me witless.

Silent companions by Laura Purcell is very creepy also a compilation of short stories called The Haunting Season

BusinessClass · 24/09/2023 15:26

what about a head full of ghosts Paul Tremblay

the shining Stephen king

and I know it's not a house per se but dark matter Michelle paver might also fit your bill

Broken Harbour by tana French is about a nearly finished house on a nearly finished new estate. I liked it.

I also loved the little stranger by Sarah waters.

Marylou62 · 24/09/2023 16:17

Her fearful symmetry by Audrey Niffeneger..
Set in Highgate Cemetery
Beautifully written..
Maybe a bit tame but it is a ghost story...

ForthegracegoI · 28/09/2023 20:02

Agree the Dark Matter is one of the scariest books I’ve read. Michelle Paver has also written a ‘house’ book « Wakenhurst » but I wasn’t as impressed as with dark matter.
