A trilogy by S J Bennett in which the late queen is the detective. Reminds me of Miss Marple. First one is called The Windsor Knot .

Chickenkorma64 · 05/06/2023 22:46

The inspector Hawthorne books by Anthony Horowitz.
The first one is called “The Word is Murder”

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/06/2023 22:50

The Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny is just glorious.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/06/2023 20:07

I just read and liked this YA trilogy Leigh Bardugo

Definitely worth trying Strike, although they are very flawed.

This YA series by Lian Hearn is exceptional imo.

Yes to His Dark Materials. although personally I prefer his Sally Lockhart series.

Ngaio Marsh
Margery Allingham
Charles Paris
Agatha Raisin

Yes to the first two.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/06/2023 20:14

A couple of one-offs here:
The Last House on Needless Street - Catriona Ward
Needless Alley - Natalie Marlow - this one is very flawed but readable enough

Also maybe try some Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald

Phineyj · 06/06/2023 20:16

Seconding Dorothy L Sayers.

Try Strong Poison or Murder Must Advertise.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/06/2023 20:19

@sIowhand Dorothy L Sayers is very Marmite. She drives me batshit.

devildeepbluesea · 06/06/2023 20:21

Some excellent suggest here which I am going to nick.

I love Simon Brett who writes the Charles Paris series. You might also like the Fethering mysteries, also written by Brett. I loved them. He writes women very well.

GnomeDePlume · 06/06/2023 20:28

Josephine Tey. The Franchise Affair is my favourite but The Daughter of Time is not far behind.

Simon Brett. The Fethering mysteries are good but I think his newer Declutterer series is better.

Lindsey Davies. Mysteries set during Roman times. The first series features Marcus. These are good. The second series features his adopted daughter Albia. These are better. I love listening to these as audio books. They go beautifully with working on my allotment!

I've just read the words "Her Majesty didn't seem puzzled any more, thank goodness, merely grim: the way she looked when watching parade manoeuvres poorly executed by troops of foreign nations in the rain."
It made me smile.
