What kind of books do you like? Do you like fiction or non fiction? Classics or modern? Male or female authors (or both)? Writers in English or translation? Literary fiction or genre writing? Romances or family sagas or coming of age or adventure or fantasy or crime or thrillers? We can tell you what we like but you should fill your bookcase with books you love.

I find this an odd question tbh, fill it with books you like not books that other people have told you are must haves.

I'm doing something similar. I read a lot but don't keep books any more. But I have bought a beautiful book case that I intend to fill with lovely editions of my favourite books (top shelf). The next shelf is my TBR pile.

I'm on the hunt for beautiful editions of:
Barbara Kingsolver: Prodigal Summer and The Poisonwood Bible
Margaret Atwood The Hand Maids Tale
George Orwell 1984
Sebastian Faulks Birdsong
Ann Patchett Bel Canto
Elizabeth Gilbert The Signature of All Things

There are a few others but I don't have my list to hand! Is this what you mean?

I also think this is an odd question and you either must have loads of money (if you're planning on buying new books) or loads of time (if you're planning on going around charity shops with a list).

You make it sound like its going to be decorative rather than a place to store the books that you have read, want to read or mean something to you? If that's the case, you may as well go out and buy books because you like the (range of) spine colours and are of the right size to achieve the look you're aiming for.

But in case you really want to know my 'must haves', I'm an unashamed Kindle reader for fiction so don't keep that type of books but I do collect cookbooks and included book shelves when we had the kitchen redone. It stores cookbooks by people who's food I like that never get used because its easier to look up recipes on the internet than look through books.

Have you not got a huge pile of books that you've already bought and intend to read one day OP?

If not then I'm not sure a library is for you Wink
