Your really annoying ending to a book?!

I've just finished reading a book where the plot was a woman investigating the death of her sister, a death which the police thought was suicide, but she thought murder. The ending was maddening! The reader was left not knowing whether our chief character was murdered by the same man who killed her sister or was she rescued in the nick of the time?!

What books have you read with a frustrating or wrong conclusion or non-conclusion?

Worst ending to a book ever - Captain Corelli's Mandolin. I was quite pleased when the film changed it, and that usually annoys me!

Agree with this! I loved that book but hate the ending! It just made no sense!

I've remembered another (although not the title). A pair of sisters in their 30s who wrote books together but at the end you discover that the younger sister didn't exist because the mother had an abortion. There is a horrendous scene where the parents sit the very young girl (5ish) and her two older brother and have the whole family vote on whether to keep the baby. It is vile antiabortion propaganda and I was so angry when I read it.

I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman. It’s regarded as a classic so I’m sure it’s a failing on my part that I missed the point, but I wish I hadn’t bothered reading it.

I have mixed feeling on the ending of The Push by Ashley Audrain. Part of me thought it was kind of genius to have it end with a sentence that either changes or confirms everything, depending on how you felt about the very unreliable narrator, but it was also so frustrating that it was so abrupt.

I love Kate Atkinson but I really hated the end of A God in Ruins. I felt really cheated!

Ahh for me, that was what was so bloody clever about it. I literally gasped when the twist came and still remember how absolutely devastated I felt. Thought it was an amazing book, ending included.
