My terrible secret...

Sometimes I hate reading books.

There I've said it.

I can't resist buying books and have an absolute f*#k ton on my tbr pile and I just get so annoyed with books letting me down. Or just that bit where you are getting into it. But then you find a good un and you are all ready for your faith to be restored. And then the bastard thing finishes!! And you have to start the process again.

Just feel like maybe one or two a year are actually enjoyable or memorable or make me think.

There are probably two reasons 1) too many books have been published and still get published and it's a law of diminishing returns 2) too many other distractions from tv, reading stuff online and flitting about the internet that don't require much investment.

I always start a new book with such hope. Anyone else have a love/hate relationship with books and reading? I try to read more casually but I'm not fooling myself.

Click baity title I know...

Hey, I agree, I’ve basically stopped buying books (and I used to have a home where they lined the walls). Too expensive and too disappointing. If I don’t want to read it more than once it’s a failure, for me, and as for ones I read on recommendation and because I like the author, then can’t even finish … ugh. (Cuckoo’s Calling was the most recent there. Sorry, JKR, I hated it.) This is why I end up just re-reading the same set of books over and over. It’d help if the local library had better stuff, but it doesn’t.

Totally agree. I've managed to accidentally read three near future dystopian AI novels this year (I hadn't read the reviews or the blurb so it's my own fault). They've left me feeling really down and I can't face reading anything at the moment 🙁...but also miss being into a book.

I'm finding more and more books a disappointment lately - the first chapter is great, but then it tails off or goes into some boring backstory from 20 years ago printed in annoying italics.

I am not alone!
