Heart shaped box by Joe Hill. Found it really scary

Most things by Catriona Ward. Start with Rawblood

PaperwhiteTheGhost · 02/04/2023 02:04

The Toll House
The Whistling
Dark Matter

James Herbert - Haunted.

Good old fashioned ghost story. The tension builds and builds. Chilling.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Walters. Fabulous

Also probably out of print now but Gad's Hall and The Haunting of Gad's Hall (two novellas but usually printed together) by Norah Lofts is amazing. Actually a lot of Norah Lofts' creepy books are great (as is her historical fiction)

Ghost Story by Peter Straub. Nothing like the imo feeble film adaptation,it was far more complex. Scared the bejesus out of me when I first read it.

DoraChance · 02/04/2023 07:44

I just finished A Good House for Children by Kate Collins which was really creepy.

Anything by Laura Purcell.

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

efeslight · 02/04/2023 13:53

Perhaps not exactly what you are looking for, but I reread Agatha Christie's And then there were none recently and found it very creepy

beastlyslumber · 02/04/2023 14:05

Anything by Alison Littlewood

Try M. R. James. No one has bettered him. (I'd also recommend the brilliant Mark Gatiss documentary. It's available on youtube.)

OhVicIveFallen · 03/04/2023 21:41

Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt. Very creepy.

Seconding that, his stories are brilliant.

Yes, there is one scene in this book that I've never forgotten!

There are several that have adhered firmly in my memory! 😱

I know you're probably looking for a book but hear me out Grin this is the last thing I read that genuinely gave me chills. I started it in the bath one day and didn't come out until I was a prune haha.

Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt. Very creepy.

That's a good one. I went to uni with him and he was so quiet and unassuming. I also really loved the follow-up: Echo (which is about mountaineering).

Alltheprettyseahorses · 05/04/2023 08:46

Another vote for Dark Matter.

The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood is short but wonderful.

Bbq1 · 05/04/2023 17:44

I really recommend The Silent Companions. Super creepy with that tense undercurrent and a huge twist at the end

Now I couldnt get on with his follow up, must try again.

Dark was genuinely scary, love Catriona Ward.
