Also, and particularly if you know Greenwich or Whitehall, A Landing on the Sun by Michael Frayn is very good.

Oh, just thought of another…..Iris Murdoch's Under the Net is great, really funny and evocative of London.

Glad I found this old thread, as I was just about to ask the same question. On the back of the suggestions, I've ordered the Rivers of London series for my son who is at uni in London.

Has anyone read "London Orbital" by Iain Sinclair? It's a non-fiction book about a walk around the M25. It seems to get very good reviews, and I think it's right up my FiL's street.
