It's mum's birthday this month
She is a voracious and widely read reader.
Any suggestions?
She likes Anthony Trollope, George Eliot, most Thomas Hardy and in then in more modern tastes she loved Lindsay Davis Falco, Patrick O'Brien, CJ Sansom, the wolf hall trilogy, Ellis Peters.

Anything newish and really good I should try?

Has she read the Cazalet Chronicles?

AuntieDolly · 08/03/2023 18:01

Sorry, not exactly newish!

I read this and thought it was rubbish! I too was attracted by the title, but it’s nothing to do with the Brontës and was just quite weird.

Sorry it didn't suit you, I like weird though. And really was chasing down a lot of early C20th female writers at the time.

I like all the same things as your Mum. Here are a few of my favourites...
Andrew Taylor Ashes of London series, good plots and quirky view of history.
Robert Harris, especially the Cicero trilogy and An Officer and A Spy (about the Dreyfus Affair).
Anything by William Boyd, especially Restless.
Anything by Steven Veerapen
A Month in the Country by J L Carr, pure delicious delight.
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.
