Help me find this book! (vague description only)

Can anyone tell me what this book was that I read back in … ooooh… probably 2003??

It was based on a true story (or was actually true life events) where a woman had blocked out much of her childhood. I believe she lived in Africa and there were giant ants that would walk right through her house. She started to keep a diary of her dreams because they were so vivid and eventually uncovered lost memories she had repressed.

Sooo vague, I know!

I’ve always been curious what book it was and even remember the girl I leant it to at school (and never got it back - thanks, Rhiannon!!!)

Could it be Cocktail Hour under the Tree of Forgetfulnes by Alexandra Fuller? I'm not sure it completely fits the bill but it's a maybe.

Could it have been the poisonwood Bible?

It does sound a bit reminiscent of the Poisonwood Bible, with sisters called Ada and Leah whose father was a Baptist missionary in the Congo.

Yes and there was a bit where the village was overrun by ants too
