My first one is:
Have you read Bear Town by Fredrik Backman?

Is it any good?

For something lighter than my usual thriller/mystery/suspense genre I recently read:

Take My Husband by Ellen Meister it was a light read, the ending was a bit unsatisfying, definitely good though.

I've read Beartown. I really enjoyed it. There are two more in the series I believe - but I haven't got to those yet. I love the author - A Man Calked Ove is in my top 5 favourite books ever!

Do you think there are a lot of dishonest reviews?

And are you conflating "reviews" with "opinions"?

buckeejit · 18/02/2023 00:43

Aye Beartown was pretty good

Yes have read Beartown on the recommendation of a friend. Our whole book group read it and unusually we all liked it - some to a lesser degree granted, but it got a thumbs up all round. Beautifully written, moving too.

I have tried it twice and couldn’t get on with it. But then I normally hate books that people love.

I just read Beartown after seeing it on a lot of people's favourite book list for 2022. I really liked it but find l have very little interest in getting the next book in the series. I presume it pursues the same characters and l don't have a huge curiosity to see how they got on afterwards. Is it worth reading the whole series?.
I loved A man called Ove too.

Massive Frederik Backman fan here! Loved all the Beartown books - have just read the most recent one The Winners - and loved it.

Oh good to hear that. Will get the next one then as like his writing.

I loved Beartown and A Man Called Ove.
Thought the second in the Beartown series was meh, so won't be reading the third. Read another of his called Anxious People and hated that.

I love Backman's books. Beartown's absolutely excellent.

I'm asking about Beartown because reviews can be manipulated.

Additionally, I read Ove, it was an easy read and enjoyable, but I don't rave about it in the way so many people do.

Beartown sounds like it might be small town intrigue, which appeals to me.
