Counting books I have read.

I get through a lot of books a year. I’m on my own most of the day and I normally use audiobooks to keep me company. As an example I have done 17 so far this year.

but I’m finding I’m counting books. I keep a track of what I have read as I get through so many and after several times of starting the same one I decided a few years ago to do Goodreads to keep track so I don’t re listen.

I got annoyed with myself this year as I hadn’t done as many as I had the year before. This is ridiculous. I’m not in a race with anyone. And defiantly not in a race with myself. But I do appear to have moved to a race with myself. Which again is stupid.

does anyone else do this? It’s weird right? Who cares how many I have read. Think it got worse this year as on some of my reading groups ( I stay on for recommendations) people were ganged up upon and told they were lying when saying how many they had got though.

Do u count ur books? How have I got myself to this? It’s so stupid.

I used to but I make a conscious effort not to care now. Last year I had a 50 book target and I purposely didn't read a huge book I wanted to as I wouldn't have met my target. 😂

I deliberately made an effort last year to read less than the year before as was trying to wane myself off reading cheap Kindle thrillers that were ultimately unsatisfying. I set myself a Good Reads target of 80 I think and actually read a few less as was focusing on quality. Are you on the 50 books thread? That's helped me realise that I actually am not that prolific a reader - think there was someone who read a book a day on it - and also that we all read vastly different amounts.

I like keeping track of what I've read but it doesn't really worry me too much what the number is. I do tend to get a bit bored when I've been reading the same book for more than a week though... It normally means I'm not enjoying it that much!

I deliberately haven't set myself a Goodreads challenge this year as I found it just became obsessive for me. I'd see myself doing well, so want to up it, then life would happen or I'd just be reading longer/slower books and I'd get behind target which would actually make me not want to read, then I'd only want to pick up quick things to try and work it back. So this year I am just focusing on reading a bit more variety, picking up the books I want instead of those I think will be quick and seeing how I get on. I'm basically trying to remember that reading is supposed to be a pleasure and something to relax me, not something else on the Todo list!

ManAboutTown · 29/01/2023 08:23

Reading is both a pleasure and education process - I wouldn't read the sort of shite that Jilly Cooper or Tom Clancy write but accept it is appealing to many

PetitPorpoise · 29/01/2023 08:32

It's hard not to amd Goodreads does lend itself to that by keeping dates.

I've not set any goals this year other than to try and read a bit each week and keep my momentum going. I'm doing this by having two books going at once - one easy and one more challenging - which I've never done before.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 29/01/2023 08:40

I set goodreads challenges but I don't stick to it, 2021 my goal was 50 and I read 90 books. 2022 was 70 and I read 38.
It's just a guide, it doesn't bother me if I don't reach it. Don't obese over it is my advice. Smile

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 29/01/2023 23:02

I keep a record of what I read but I don't set goals. It also helps me keep track of what order i need to read books in if i am reading a series. I can read one book after another but then go weeks without reading anything.

Hellohah · 30/01/2023 20:44

I keep track of my books on goodreads because I use the library, and someone recommended me a book, I ordered it and when I read the first page, realised I'd already read it. They didn't describe it very well haha.

I have set a target of 26 books, which I know I'll do. But I set it low so I don't feel disappointment at the end of the year. I love trashy books, but I love a lot of different books and if I was racing to do a hundred or something, I know I'd miss out. I've just started A Suitable Boy. 1475 pages, with tiny print. I'm not going to finish that any time soon.

PermanentTemporary · 30/01/2023 21:36

I'm on the 50 books thread because of the recommendations and the community, and the first year I was on it I read 38 books. That shocked me because, yes, reading a lot is something I believe about myself, my identity. Turns out I don't go much over 50 and thats a lot less than many others on there, but it doesn't matter. I've let go of feeling like I must read loads as a target, becausethe temptation is to read more short books. But I still like counting!

BooksAndHooks · 30/01/2023 21:44

Yes and I wish I hadn’t started the reading challenge. I’ve got a few really long books I have put off reading as they will take so long and reduce the number I can get read. It’s ridiculous.
