China by Edwin Rutherford but it's more of a historical saga than a thriller. I haven't read this one but I have read a couple of his others.

Qiu Xiao Long has written a v good detective series set in Shanghai. He's a Chinese writer but lives in the USA. "Death of a Red Heroine" is the first one.
