A Little Life

I watched Graham Norton last night and one of the guests was James Norton. He said he is appearing in a play of A Little Life soon in London. Apparently it's over 3 hours long. Having read the book (thanks to hearing about it on here) over a few weeks I'm not sure I could cope with such an onslaught of misery in one go, you'd come out needing a very stiff drink!

Anyone planning on seeing it? I'm fascinated by how they'd do it so might try and get tickets.

I don’t think I could bring myself to go to this. I read the book on holidays and when I finished it, I left it behind on the book-swap shelf, as I really didn’t want to see it again. (Felt a bit like I was passing on a cursed object!). I was like one of those teachers holding up a dirty exercise book by the dog-eared corner, with their fingertips. I couldn’t bear it any longer! Finished it, depressed and disturbed. Appreciated the ‘art’ of it but no, do not want to go near it again, stage, screen or book version! ((Shudder))

Well, I went, I saw etc …

It was very well done, I think the seats on the stage got a bit of a bum deal really. I did find myself wondering why we were all there and Im not sure it transfers greatly to stage. That said, the performances were fantastic, they must be knackered! Harold really stood out for me.

I didn't realise it was still going on @StColumbofNavron ! You must have seen one of the last performances. They must be looking forward to some time off now - they were probably popping open the champagne and booking some panto roles Grin

This was the last date in the original run (deliberately booked as last shows often have a buzz about them), but this has extended and is transferring to the Savoy theatre.

I'm going to see this tomorrow! Show starts
at 7pm but my ticket says to arrive at 17.45.

Anyone know why?

Are you sitting on the stage?

fancreek · 03/07/2023 19:22

Nope! @XelaM

StColumbofNavron · 03/07/2023 21:52

Just for crowd control/bag checks etc. I wouldn’t bother to be honest. It was fine to arrive 15 mins before.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 03/07/2023 22:16

@TopoPizza I felt exactly the same and left it on the book shelf in an AirBnB. My friend said the same, she sent it straight to the charity shop when she had finished it.

BaconAndAvocado · 04/07/2023 14:06

Just seen that my local cinema will be screening it soon!

fancreek · 04/07/2023 23:48

Well I saw it and it was amazing but god it's long!

A few empty seats though and lots of people left during acts or didn't come back after intermission. Saw a lot of tears too!

Actors were amazing and not sure about the poster up thread of said JN was naked for most of the play - hardly!

Pretty true to the book and transfers well though I found the friendships a bit flat. JN worked really well as Jude but not sure they got Wilhelm right - his attractiveness from Bridgerton wasn't quite projected!

Would have been better if the audience I was with were quieter, but there you go!

Kermitgreen · 06/07/2023 17:25

Booked my cinema ticket! I’ll be going alone as I can’t inflict it on anyone else but very excited!

XelaM · 13/07/2023 08:56

This is extremely short notice but I have an -on-stage ticket (first row A) for the Savoy at 13:30 TODAY but the person who I bought it for can't go today. Would anyone want it? It was £70. PM me if you want it.

OlleOskiFelle · 13/07/2023 10:56

I was in Londonast week and vaguely considered going again but couldn't put myself through it, I saw Brokeback Mountain instead.
I have a cinema ticket for ALL though.

BaconAndAvocado · 13/07/2023 13:31

Got my cinema ticket along with the rest of my book group. Hankies at the ready and it’s so long!
