The most miserable and sad book ever is going on to the stage. Has anyone else read this?

Jesus Christ, how is this going to work? How is this going to be less than 2 hours and not depressing as hell to watch?

I hated this book the first time I read it and then was compelled to read it a second time. It's definitely an amazing book, but bloody hell it's depressing. How are they going to deal with all of the rape/violence on stage?

I can't see how they're going to cram so many years worth of content into a play.

I have read it, and loathed it. It’s grotesque misery porn that dangles the promise of ever more detailed horrors of child abuse in front of the reader to keep them reading. I have no idea how it would be stageable. Just put Jude centre stage self—harming and being pretty while other characters periodically mooch on to mock, beat, rape or patch him up? Ugh.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 24/11/2022 08:06

God. No idea.

Fab timing as well. Wanting to take your mind off the CoL crisis, climate crisis, war, recession, Brexit, housing crisis and the UK government falling apart? Come to the theatre!

Awful, emotionally manipulative book. They should make it a musical.

merrymelodies · 24/11/2022 08:23

I disliked the book so much! I had to force myself to finish it. In fact, I don't even remember if I did finish it.

pollyhemlock · 24/11/2022 09:02

I’d rather stick pins in my eyes than sit through a stage performance of this awful book. And apparently it’s four hours long !

McFuggy · 24/11/2022 10:08

Yes. It sounds awful doesn't it.

I think I'll just go to Book of Mormon again.

Four hours of misery porn plus creepy fetishisation of gay men and their relationships. No thanks.

BaconAndAvocado · 24/11/2022 15:40

I loved this book but don’t think I could deal with the stage version!
Although, as James Norton is involved I could make an effort!

Couldn't agree more

Yep this pretty much sums up the book for me. Except add in “and unfeasibly multi talented” after pretty. Really didn’t understand the hype. Can’t imagine a play of it.

James Norton should think better.

Yes, and ‘bakes like a dream’, and ‘brilliantly good lawyer’. It’s like Misery Porn By Numbers.

MarshaBradyo · 24/11/2022 15:56

This is the worst book I’ve tried to read. Grotesque is the right word.

minipie · 24/11/2022 20:03

CowPie doesn’t he also have a spellbinding singing voice or am I making that up?

Probably cured cancer and solved world peace in his spare time 🙄

I love this book, it's beautiful. I'm not sure I would want to see it on stage though. A friend sent me the link - apparently it's four hours long? You wouldn't want to sit in the upper circle - you would throw yourself off by the interval.

Oh I loved this book! It’s one of my favourites.
I was considering the stage show but I don’t think I could sit through four hours.

I could not finish it - horrifying. Putting it on stage is bonkers.
