American Dirt ending questions - WITH SPOILERS

I don't quite understand the final phone call with Javier. He said 'Oh Lydia, I would never hurt you' or something like that and she realised that her every triumph and deception was a nonsense because of course she would be dead if he wanted her dead.

So - huh? Was he not trying to kill her then?

And what did the note say, in the hotel at the start? I can't remember and I have it on audiobook so I can't flick back to check.

Was Javier trying to kill her and Luca, or not?

Yeah I agree, it was a lazy ending with the author trying to quickly wrap up the plot. So if he wasn't tried to kill her why did he send men to the hotel, why send the young guy on the journey to bring her in? The graffiti painted on the town walls.. stupid ending which ruined a compelling novel.

The Javier thing never rang true. I did not buy that a seasoned gangster would spare some woman and her son.
