The Ink Black Heart *MNHQ grumpily edits title to remove spoiler and warns everyone else about said spoiler in thread*

I've recently finished 'The Ink Black Heart'. I love all the Strike novels but this one has some less satisfying elements and this is one. How are Vikram and Gus meant to know one another?

I get that they are both frustrated prodogies but how do they actually know one another before they team up?

This is probably reader error - I'm sure I missed something but I'd love it if somebody could put me out of my misery rather than reread 1000 pages!

Weren't they both members of a niche online game, prior to The Ink Black Heart cartoon?

were they? Maybe! Not Drek's Game obviously as they co-created that as an 'Ink Black Heart'spin off .. what were they a part of pre 'The Ink Black Heart'

I missed this but always assumed they met online. I liked that - it's so tedious when every single character in a book turns out to be each other's/some random VIPs secret daughter/great college love/stolen at birth missing heir. It's not how modern life works at all and they are both such extremely online introverted characters.

There's a bit of that in IBH. JKR handles it well but just feels unnecessary imho.

I've read it twice and was specifically looking for that information the second time and I couldn't spot anything. I can only assume they met online through another game or maybe a discussion about the cartoon.

Spoilers much?

PorridgewithQuark · 01/11/2022 08:52

Sorry about the spoilers!

Thank you for the answers though, I was thinking I'd missed something or forgotten.

My memory is terrible but oddly I can usually remember what I've read better than things people have told me or than things that have actually happened! So it was really annoying me that this didn't fall into place in my brain by the end of the book!

I'm somewhat glad it appears that it might have been left somewhat unresolved. Could it have been Club Penguin even?

I agree and that's why the Nicole resolution was pleasing actually (trying to avoid yet another total spoiler!)
