How Colleen Hoover rose to rule the bestseller list

This is one of the most unusual literary success stories I've heard.

How Colleen Hoover rose to rule the bestseller list
By Alexandra Alter

To say she’s currently the best-selling novelist in the United States, to even compare her to other successful authors who have landed several books on the best seller lists, fails to capture the size and loyalty of her audience.

She holds six of the top 10 spots on The New York Times’s paperback fiction best-seller list, a stunning number of simultaneous best sellers from a single author. She has sold 8.6 million print books this year alone — more copies than the Bible, according to NPD BookScan.

And her success — a shock that she’s still processing, she said — has upended the publishing industry’s most entrenched assumptions about what sells books.

I read a book to see what all the hype is about I actually brought two and didn’t finish the second. I am pleased for her that she is successful but I didn’t find her books that good. Very implausible character - the second one was her finding the neurosurgeon on the roof smoking pot and just happens to meet the sister of the millionaire husband who is best friends with him (!) some world

The sister who just happens to want to work for her for nothing, in her new florist shop where she doesn’t need to get up at 4am to buy any actual flowers…

Maybe the world and the US is in a bad way and people want escapism.

I was going to say I've never even heard of her then I realised she wrote It Ends with Us which my 14yo loved. So a YA booktok sensation. Booktok has transformed YA book sales, my daughter and her friends are obsessed, our local Waterstones has a booktok section now. I suppose it's like my generation all reading Flowers in the Attic and Lace.

yerdaindicatesonbends · 16/10/2022 10:20

Her books, I find, are just so easy to read. The stories aren’t mind blowing and won’t change my life, and I can’t even tell you any real specifics of her books I’ve read, other than boy meets girl, but they’ve obviously provided brief moments of escapism, and can you blame anyone for that?

CanYouFeelMyHeart · 16/10/2022 10:37

This is the author who wrote that nonsense about a woman who was or wasn't a ghost and had some sort of being take over her body or something? Absolute gibberish.

Goingtogoinsane · 20/10/2022 23:12

I refuse to read any out of principle (every other person on tik tok recommending her books. Also saw a brief few lines from one of the books which was god awful) however she is really sparking a love of reading in the younger generation with can only be a good thing

Goingtogoinsane · 20/10/2022 23:13

Which not with*!

Covetthee · 21/10/2022 08:17

her success hasn’t been overnight, i remember reading some of her books in my mid 20’s and now i’m 36!

at that age I liked them, but now as adult i really don’t like her books. It’s telling young girls that certain type of men are so attractive when in real life you would be telling girls that those are red signals! Romanticzing those issues isn’t right

Moody angsty men and relationships isn’t attractive and thats what she is trying to sell.
