I normally love Michel Faber and any of his other books I’ve read have hooked me immediately.

I’m about 30% of the way through this 864 page book and, while I don’t dislike it, I just find it very slow going.

Is it worth sticking with?

Read the alien planet one if you like wanking vicars. I discovered I do NOT like wanking vicars.

I HATED this book. I thought the writing was all clichéd except for one description of a child in the bath, which was deeply creepy. I love Victorian novels and to me this was a failed attempt at the genre.

I forgot about all the wanking!

I think I just hated him so much as a character, I even begrudged him a wank!!

Sooooo much wanking. I wanted the aliens to eat him.

It's ages since I read this, but I remember loving it.

It's been a age since I read it but the ending made me literally throw the book across the room. 800 plus pages and it didn't have a proper ending. It was a great journey but I do like a beginning, a middle, and an end.

It's a brilliant book in my opinion, but if it isn't grabbing you, leave it; life is too short.
For those of you who do enjoy well-written, gritty, historical fiction, I can recommend the works of Laura Shepherd-Robinson. "Blood and Sugar" and "Daughters of Night" are fantastic.

I absolutely agree - I loved but every book is not for everyone. If you're not enjoying it read something else. If you like a Victorian story I would definitely recommend Fingersmith.

I loved it. The description of Sugar's apartment and the hot bath she takes.
For those who enjoyed Crimson Petal and Fingersmith, I'd also recommend Slammerkin by Emma Donaghue.

That's a great book.
