I still have last year's winner The Promise by Damon Galgut TBR, but I was quite impressed by The Fortune Men by Nadifa Mohamed, another book on last year's shortlist. It told the true story of a young Somali man with a wife and family in Cardiff who was hanged for a murder he almost certainly didn't do in 1952. He spoke limited English and couldn't read and write in the alphabet we use (I don't think he was illiterate in the language(s) he'd grown up with before becoming a sailor and ending up in Britain).
It's on the news on Radio 4 today that 70 years later, his family have had an apology from the police in Wales.
