Metronome- what did you make of the ending( spoiler alert)?

Did her son find her or was she dreaming as she died?

I am understanding she died because previously the italics were the thoughts in her head. I feel like she was seeing a happy ending for her. Of course Ruth would have made it for some time, because she is immune but heaven knows if she lived.
