Has anyone read this? I listened to summer water on audio book and now this one (I read too but audio book for the car and the kitchen) I really like her writing style and was engrossed in summer water.

I feel like I missed a 'climax' in night waking. I didn't realise I was in the last chapter and then it ended. I enjoyed it but it was a bit flat. There was a dead baby but I didn't know whose it was at the end. The main couple 'made up' and I thought I'd missed something by being a distracted listener. I haven't with other audio books.

Can anyone help? Also what was Giles arrested for when he was younger? I missed that too, ironically from shouts of 'mummy, mummy, I need you'

She writes such realistically average peoples lives and frustrations :)

It’s a long time since I read it, but as far as I remember, the dead baby was fathered by one of the landowning family (one of Giles’ ancestors) on one of the island women, the woman who was being tended by the nurse who wrote the cache of letters? And Giles was arrested for some minor fight as a teenager — nothing key to the narrative..?

The real ‘climax’ is the protagonist acting a job interview by telling the 19thc story and breaking away from motherhood, I’d have said.
