Travelling soon and debating installing my kindle account on DD's iPad. I've a couple of Rick Riordan books on there that she can read but apart from that, all my books are definitely more adult than child.
She reads a lot, and quickly. Just at the end of Harry Potter so I need new ideas for her anyway.

The City of Ember trilogy. Bit dark in places (post apocalypse scenario) but it's generally quite positive.

hedgehogger1 · 14/05/2022 11:19

My daughter and I both enjoyed the nevermoor books. Think it starts with "the trial of morrigan crow"

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2022 13:02

The Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Funkyslippers · 14/05/2022 13:06

Hunger Games series, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book!

BreezeofGreen · 14/05/2022 16:08

Surely the hunger games is aimed at older? I've actually got that, but can't see her reading it or enjoying the idea of it.
We've a lot of these in paper but a couple I need to check out 📚

Dd and I loved the Anne of Green gables series.
i always hated those! Maybe I should re-read!

i think Narnia is too old fashioned for her (English isn't her first language) and is one I was planning to read with her.

Hunger Games is for 10+ year olds, devoured it as did all his school mates. He made me read it too just so we could discuss it 😂

DS and I enjoyed these too.

Garth Nix’s books are good for adults and kids too.

Anthony Horowitz’s power of 5 series?

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 14/05/2022 18:06

Many of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books are suitable for a 10 year old, particularly the Tiffany ones.

Phil Pullman books, His Dark Materials are good.

Michael Morporgo books.

Have they read the Lemony Snicket books?

SoggyPaper · 14/05/2022 18:10

thinking about other audiobooks DS and I have enjoyed in the car…

AngieSage’s Magyk (as suggested above)

msny different Abi Elphinstone books

Michelle Paver’s wolf brother books

Piers Torbay’s the last wild (and subsequent books)

the Artemis fowl books

mortal engines (DS didn’t like the next one though as it went a bit Romancey).

Snowiscold · 14/05/2022 18:11

Holes.
His Dark Materials trilogy.
Coram Boy -though subject matter is a bit disturbing. Might be too old for her.
Wolves of Willoughby Chase.
Little House on the Prairie series.

DelurkingAJ · 14/05/2022 18:14

Rosemary Sutcliffe, Geoffrey Trease, Diana Wynne Jones, Helen Cresswell, Michael Bond?

theproudgeek · 14/05/2022 19:30

The Murder Mist Unladylike Series by Robin Stevens might be worth a look

CloudPine · 14/05/2022 19:43

The Wizard of a Earthsea. Such a fantastic trilogy (quartet?)

OceanAtTheEnd · 14/05/2022 19:47

All by Sophie Anderson:

The house with chicken legs

The girl who speaks bear

The castle of tangled magic

pastapestoparmesan · 14/05/2022 19:53

Katya Balen is my new favourite children’s author. Really easy to read, but very deep and emotional.

honeybushbunch · 14/05/2022 20:00

Yes yes to Joan Aiken, Diana Wynne Jones, Swallows and Amazons series, Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie series. I probably wouldn’t do Pullman yet tbh, I think better for a couple of years older.
My DD (9) recently really enjoyed When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.

Try also:
Noel Streatfeild, especially Ballet Shoes
A Little Princess/The Secret Garden
Tom’s Midnight Garden
Moondial
Eve Garnett, The Family at One End Street
E Nesbit, The Phoenix & the Carpet and the Treaure Seekers
Little Women?

InvincibleInvisibility · 14/05/2022 20:06

Power of five is quite dark.

I'd definitely say His Dark Materials trilogy.

My 10 year old has just finished (and loved) the first book in the Bartimaeus series by Jonathan Stroud. It's a series Ive read several times!

InvincibleInvisibility · 14/05/2022 20:06
