Tracing a book by E M Foster

I have heard of a book by E M Foster about a person who was rescued by another person, but because they were unable to put a monetary price on their own life they just said Thank You.

Sorry for the sketchy details but I wondered if anyone could help me with the name of this book please?

Google suggests that it's a short story called "The Rock"

Apparently this story is in a collection called 'The Life to come and other stories', OP. Amazon have it in paperback but I haven't looked at the other sites. You should be able to get hold of a copy by the looks of it, though.
