Police detectives Woman led USA West Coast,
Murder of a computer gamer from a while back when 'arcades' were the way.
Suspect is a gamer who is very good and sells his achieved status Level in a game to other gamers. He plays a 'healer' in the games not a warrior.
I think the story starts with a body on a beach.

There is another book which involves same/similar woman officer.
An attack at a lake resort home in early Winter when most cabins are shut.
Long chase through wooded National Park type.
People brewing drugs (Meth) in motorhome. It explodes and burns.

My memory is that they were set and written contemporaneously.

Is it Want To Play? And sequels by PJ Tracy

jamie85 · 18/09/2021 16:06

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit Thanks for the PJ Tracy suggestion Want to Play, I think it could be but not at all convinced by reading the description on Amazon. I am fairly sure of ocean setting. Neither do I recall the Monkeewrench name.
I shall look out for those they sound good.

I have just discovered AJ Mackenzie. Romney Marsh setting, Late 1790s, Smugglers and a murder or two. The Parson is the lead character, with strong women featured one with a career, Georgette Heyer it ain't!! Each of these introduce developments in firearms but only in passing.

First book is Body At The Door, a later one is Body in the Boat.

I was also going to suggest they may be Sue Grafton Kinsey Millhone series . Don't recall those particular plots but there were 25 books and based in the 1980s when the series started

Is it from the Women's Murder Club series by James Paterson?

Or Karin Slaughter?
