They're both fantastic but quite heavy choices for someone who doesn't read much. The Kite Runner is more about men and ATSS is more about women, so maybe go with what you're more interested in.

bruffin · 02/09/2021 08:34

A thousand splendid suns is quite relevant to todays situation in Afghanistan

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/09/2021 08:35

that is why i just bought it @bruffin

i dont read much because i dont make time and i tend to spend too long once i pick up a book, dangerously,

A thousand splendid suns. It’s just breathtaking. I love the descriptions of Afghanistan and it made me want to visit. And the relationships between the women. Just utterly amazing. I read it every year.

Cam001 · 02/09/2021 08:42

Loved both books, but ATSS really affected me. It's such a moving story and very relevant for today. One particular chapter had me sobbing my eyes out. Hosseini is a terrific writer and his own life story is worth reading up on.

TeenTitan007 · 02/09/2021 09:17

Both are lovely! I'd say ATSS first if you are new to Hosseni's writing. I just finished 'and the mountains echoed' - made me sob! He's amazing and taught me so much about Afghans and Afghanistan.

JaneJeffer · 02/09/2021 09:39

ATSS is the best. Kite Runner ending was too Hollywood.

Nospringchickendipper · 02/09/2021 09:44

Read ATSS first. My daughter and I read it and we still talk about it years later.

CannaeRemember · 02/09/2021 11:13

I loved both books so you could really take your pick.

I keep meaning to re-read ATSS but hesitate every time I pluck it from the bookshelf as since first reading I have a daughter myself and my mum is no longer with us. It was wrenching enough the first time round.

Gremlinsateit · 02/09/2021 13:06

ATSS is gut-wrenchingly sad.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/09/2021 22:20

thank you

ATTS is my favourite book. Beautifully written

RealHousewifeOfEastLondon · 02/09/2021 22:38

ATSS is my favourite book! Sad but amazing.

annacondom · 02/09/2021 22:44

I loved both but for you, ATSS will be best.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 03/09/2021 10:09

ATSS is the easier to 'get into'. The Kite Runner is also very good but I found the first couple chapters hard going.

Thehistorygirls · 04/09/2021 17:52

ATSS is about a hundred times better, IMO. It’s an amazing book.

AlexaShutUp · 04/09/2021 17:54

I loved both, but ATSS affected me more deeply. It is incredibly sad.

QueenJulian · 04/09/2021 17:55

ATSS is an amazing book!

Barwell76 · 04/09/2021 17:59

I preferred ATSS, but it is very sad. I learnt a lot about the recent history of Afghanistan

MayorGoodwaysChicken · 04/09/2021 18:00

Just don’t do what I did and read the end of ATDS on a train. I was bawling and trying to hide it. It’s amazingly written but utterly heartbreaking. I read it a few years back but honestly don’t think I could read it in light of what is happening there today. It’s too close to home now.

MoiCnoi · 04/09/2021 18:01

I'm welling up just thinking about ATSS. It's beautiful. Moving. And it haunts me.

QueenLagertha · 04/09/2021 18:14

Both excellent reads. Enjoy OP

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/09/2021 18:23

The Kite Runner is good. ATSS is not very good.

freelions · 04/09/2021 18:27

I've read both and enjoyed both but ATSS is the one that has stayed with me

I can't actually remember much about the plot or characters in KR but I can still vividly remember certain parts of ATSS and it must be about 12 or 13 years since I read it

miltonj · 04/09/2021 18:39

I loved a thousand splendid suns. It's incredibly sad though, especially in light of what's going on now, so be prepared for that.
