I was browsing a website just now and came across this talk by Ben Aaronovich scheduled for the end of September. It will be live streamed as well as being in Kensington Library.

Thank you!!!

I was so prepared to love it, but for some reason really hated the first book and didn’t get past it. I liked the idea of the rivers, but I think I found the Punch and Judy theme too grim.

Thank you!

@Gremlinsateit

I felt like that the first time I read it; it was 100% my sort of thing but it didn't do it for me.

I gave it another go (years later) and loved it, have read them all at least three times now. So if the genre is your sort of thing, I'd definitely suggest trying again!

Also, thanks OP :)

I think the first one is entertaining but a bit of a mess. However, I love the series and am a huge fan.

Amortentia · 07/09/2021 16:47

I would strongly recommend you listen to the series on Audible. The narrator is amazing and really enhances the book.

lazylinguist · 07/09/2021 17:11

I really like the concept of the books, and lots of the background stuff about the rivers, and how the magic works etc,but I find the actual characters very two-dimensional and the plots a bit meh.

SoupDragon · 07/09/2021 17:14

This was only to draw attention to the talk by the author.

I have just finished the first book. I enjoyed it far more than I feel like I should have. It is daft. If I liked the first one will I probably like the rest?

Topseyt · 15/09/2021 11:27

I've been reading and enjoying these for the last few weeks. He is now one of my favourite authors, along with Jodi Taylor (Chronicles of At. Mary's) and Genevieve Cogman (Invisible Library series).

I might well look in on the talk.

Second for listening on audible, awesome narrator. I'd love to see him act the role on TV
