Have you read Barkskins by Annie Proulx?

If so, is it depressing? Looking at the list of chapters, the last section is called "Sliding into darkness". What with the pandemic, I'm trying to avoid depressing books at the moment, however brilliant they may be - I'll read them another time! I'm aiming to read uplifting things at the moment - would you say this book is?! Thanks!

Placemarking as it is on my TBR list

It is an excellent book but perhaps not the book for you right now.

Annie Proulx's books are increasingly depressing (Shipping News the least so, although I did like Accordian Crimes) so I'd say avoid. I read a collection of her short stories last year and it was brutal, people died in every story. Her writing is fab and the stories have stayed with me but uplifting is not the word to describe her work, her characters live short brutal lives.

I've just started this (found in during my 15 min library slot - feels like Supermarket Sweep), so I can't answer your question yet. However, though I love Annie Proulx, it's not for her feelgood vibes! DH and I once read a book of her down-to-earth short stories that we nicknamed, rather ironically, "The Tourist Guide to Wyoming..." I've read a few of her books but I certainly wouldn't call any of them uplifting.

I love her books but it is a bit of a slog

I had to stop reading her books, much as I loved them, because they were just so sad and grim. Louise Erdrich’s too.
