Currently reading The Other Bennet Sister which is about Mary from before and during P&P and also after Mr Bennet's death. It's absolutely brilliant!

Has anyone read any others? Charlotte is supposed to be good?

I've also read Death Cones To Pemberley but wasn't that impressed TBH

I love the Other Bennet sister and recently read What Kitty did next which is also good, however the ending is a bit abrupt so it felt less satifying.

Both cover what would happen to the unmarries ones when the parents die and its great to see how the Collins settle into Longbourne.

They are often 99p on Kindle.

The Wickham show was great. Theres also P&P the musical on Prime atm along with Death Comes to Pemberly.

I read one about an Austen fan who goes on a bus tour of Bath and wants to find her own Mr Darcy. Can't actually remember the author or title, though, which is helpful...

Also to the PP questioning Mr Bennets age. I havent thought about it much but it was quite rare for people to live so long in those days.

I spent years recording gravestones for research and always got excited when I found a really old person.

I really liked Longbourne and The Other Bennet Sister.

This is not fiction, but very interesting.

I disliked Longbourne (think I'm alone in that) but enjoyed The Other Bennett Sister. Not sure how faithful 8t was to the characters but it was enjoyable. And gave me fabric warehouse envy!

The Confessions of Fitzwilliam Darcy was good - it's a short retelling from his view. Very sweet!

@DamsonJammyBastard

I enjoyed the TV show of Death Comes to Pemberley as a standalone costume drama but I didn't believe for a second they were their P&P characters. Although Matthew Goode made a convincing Wickham.

I loved Lost in Austen, from about 10 years ago, and would really enjoy seeing that one again!

Lost in Austen was great fun.

Death in Pemberley was dire and the reviewers who praised it were completely deluded.

I quite enjoyed The Other Bennet Sister and Longbourne but nothing beats rereading the original books.

Scarby9 · 16/07/2021 00:19

I really enjoyed Longbourne too, but the best spin off / version by far is The YouTube series The Lizzie Bennett Diaries.

Only 100 episodes - don't watch them all at once!
hugoagogo · 22/07/2021 07:46

I liked the diary ones by Amanda Grange, but I am going back a bit.

I enjoyed Longbourne, but more as an eye opener to what it was like below stairs. The Other Bennet Sister is on the other hand wonderfully satisfying in the way it expands on the Mary character. It explains her inner world quite brilliantly in my opinion. I second the recommendation of the audiobook, though it’s a great read too.

lomaamina · 24/07/2021 11:45

As for reading order, @FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop, if you like to delay gratification, the go for Longbourne first Smile.

upinaballoon · 29/01/2022 22:22

IsolaPribby and Iomaamina, I agree with you about the audiobook of TOBS. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I am two thirds through and wondering with relish how it will end. I could cheat but I'm not going to.

Viviennemary · 01/02/2022 16:30

I really liked Longbourne too. Didn't like Death comes to Pemberley and those dire ones by Emma Tennant. Haven't read the other Bennett sister yet. I'm surprised Mrs Bennett didnt try to marry Mary off to Mr Collins.

EishetChayil · 01/02/2022 18:56

@Rollergirl1980

Curtis Sittenfeld has a book called Eligible which is a modern retelling of P&P. I wasn't a fan though.

This was dreadful. I abandoned it about halfway in.

IceandIndigo · 02/02/2022 20:27

I'm always drawn to these sorts of books but usually find myself disappointed. Longbourne I think I would have enjoyed more as a standalone story without the link to P&P. The characters from the original book didn't quite ring true. I also found it a bit too modern in its preoocupation with the maids having to wash menstrual rags and nappies and how awful that was, I feel like that would have been routine in those days and not really remarked on.

I've also read Death Comes to Pemberley but honestly can't remember it at all, which must mean it was pretty forgettable.

absolutelynotfabulous · 03/02/2022 10:35

I also liked Longbourn (possibly even more than P and P if I'm honest) Blush.

@absolutelynotfabulous No shame in your honesty haha. I prefer the original but no judgement here
ThursdayLastWeek · 04/02/2022 15:29

I didn’t enjoy Longbourne, although I cannot recall why now.

I absolutely LOVED The Other Bennett Sister. I third the audiobook recommendation.

That would be Me and Mr Darcy by Alexandra Potter. It's very light chicklit which is not generally my thing and was written by someone with only a passing knowledge of Winchester and Bath, both places I know intimately, but I have to say, for a light read, I enjoyed it.
