I feel in need of some inspiring Greek historical fiction. Like Mary Renault or Madeleine Miller. Any suggestions?

@Frequentflier @cariadlet I just finished reading Ariadne and loved it! The book alternates viewpoints between Ariadne and her sister Phaedra. The part about Phaedra and Hippolytus was interestingly told, but I thought it VERY strange why the author didn't use the traditional narrative of vengeful Aphrodite causing Phaedra to be driven mad with desire for Hippolytus (much like Pasiphae driven mad for the bull), and instead made it seem that Phaedra's desire was a product of her own free mind. The author strongly hammered the point that poor innocent mortals suffer as collateral damage of the gods' wrath towards others, citing many examples like Pasiphae and Medusa. So why not Phaedra?

@Star55 Thanks for coming back to the thread. I'm glad you enjoyed Ariadne. It sounds really interesting. I'll look out for it next time I'm in a bookshop (how nice to be able to say that again!). I'll look out for the changes with Phaedra.

There is a new book, Elektra, coming out next spring from the author of Ariadne, which I recently read and loved! Elektra will revolve around the tragedy of Agamemnon's family -- his wife Clytmenestra, daughter Elektra, and Cassandra, the princess and prophetess of Troy he seized and brought back to Greece as his concubine.
