It is a fantastic book by Marina Lewycka.
I wanted to ask anyone who has read it if Nadezhda is the result of her mother being raped at the Concentration camp after Vera stole the cigarettes? I thought that the book was hinting at this but wonder if I just got the wrong end of the stick?

Yes, I read it and loved it - but years ago when it first came out, so I can't remember it in detail now.

But more recently I listened to a podcast of the author talking about it, and I have a feeling she alluded to that. You might want to listen and see if it answers your question

Thank you so much. I have listened to the podcast and got the answer (which is we will never know as the author decided to let it remain a mystery). I am OP, but have had a name change!

Oh good - I thought that was what she said. It is a lovely book, and I liked hearing her talk about it.
