I'm currently reading 'The History of the World in 100 Animals' by Simon Barnes.
It's phenomenal. Each chapter is about four pages long, and examines how a species has had a considerable impact on the history of humanity. It looks at mockingjays as the catalyst for Darwin's theory of evolution; at fleas for their contribution to spreading plague; our relationship with cattle across history. Genuinely unputdownable.
It's beautifully-writtwn and includes colour illustrations.
