Have loved books like:

Anything by Wally Lamb (his first three, anyway)
The Heart’s Invisible Furies
The Goldfinch

Peaked too soon really, was convinced Engleby would last all half term but couldn’t put it down!

Are there any other Faulks novels you haven't read?

I have similar tastes and I'm really enjoying The Dutch House at the moment.

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

Attempted Birdsong years ago but didn't get through it. Have a daft aversion to historical fiction. Are there any in particular O should seek out?

I will look up The Dutch House and Life After Life, thanks.

Agree Engleby is brilliant.

All the Light you Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is very good.
Notes on a Scandal
America Wife

Middle England by Jonathan Coe is also v good.

A Week in December by Sebastian Faulks is good but the similar themed Capital by John Lanchester is better , imo , so I would read that one if I were you.

If you don't like historical novels you might enjoy A Week in December which is set in the 2000s.

If you want to try another historical one, I enjoyed The Girl at the Lion D'Or.

I couldn't get through Birdsong either!

This Thing of Darkness - brilliant! One of the best books I've ever read.

How about Elena Ferrante's Neopolitan novels? There are 4 in all. I have similar tastes and loved these.
