Any ideas for new books for me please? Fiction too.

Have read and liked some but not all of Philippa Gregory's books, Alison Weir 'Innocent Traitor', most of Hilary Mantel etc.

I do like a good ghost story and short story (Elizabeth Taylor good for latter).

Historical fiction has to be Dorothy Dunnett (I recommend her all the time, because she is that good). Start with Game of Kings.

Have you read any Laura Purcell? I didn't really get on with her, but I know others who loved it - historical Gothic/ghost. Sophia Tobin is also quite good for historical Gothic style, slightly spooky novels!

I've just finished The Morning and the Evening, Ken Follet. Set in the Dark Ages (or just emerging from it).

For Historical fiction, Margaret George - her 'Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles' and 'Autobiography of Henry VIII' are both fabulous immersive doorstops.

For short horror stories I like MR James and EF Benson - both Victorian, but so creepy.

F Scott Fitzgerald's short stories really pack a lot into them if you like his writing and that jazz age.
