I enjoy reading a good book and then watching the film or TV version afterwards.

Can anyone recommend?

(Just completed His Dark Materials. Or where they're up to with the adaption).

The English Patient film is complementary to the book so an interesting read then watch.

«A Room with a View» is the only film adaptation of a book I loved that I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s true to the book, no tweaking, and the casting is impeccable.

  • The constant gardener
  • The Hunger Games
  • The Handmaids Tale
  • Cormoran Strike
  • The Lord of the Rings

A diverse selection there!

A discovery of witches
The handmaids tale

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 23/01/2021 17:16

The Handmaids Tale (in fact I found the screen adaptation far better in this case)

The Cormoran Strike series (Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling)
Mr Mercedes (and the subsequent books) by Stephen King
Room
Little Fires Everywhere
Rebecca
Normal People
The Martian
Light between the oceans
The girl on the train
Gone Girl

I tried war and peace years ago, and didn’t get far. But recently watched new tv version then read it and it was amazing.

We’ve just introduced DS to lord of the rings (cheating - using audible), and have watched the film each time he finished a book (Saturday evenings). Has been brilliant as it’s lasted 6 weeks. No idea what we’ll do next Saturday night !

I second Normal People - enjoyed the adaptation more than the book I think.

mum2jakie · 23/01/2021 20:05

I've just finished reading Little Fires Everywhere after enjoying the TV series (on Prime.)

Would also recommend Big Little Lies - book and TV series

MaMaLa321 · 23/01/2021 20:06

the recent adaptation of the Great Gatsby with de Caprio

This is an old one, Brideshead Revisited.

ritzbiscuits · 23/01/2021 23:38

My Brilliant Friend HBO series is one of the best things I've ever watched.

eddiemairswife · 23/01/2021 23:45

Another recommendation for Brideshead Revisited, also The Jewel in the Crown (4 books).

blue25 · 23/01/2021 23:56

The Painted Veil
Brooklyn
Lots of Stephen King-especially The Shining
A Walk in the Woods

Thewithesarehere · 24/01/2021 00:00

Outlander (Diana Gabaldon) is an excellent one. It’s rare to see a book converted into so great a series.

@ritzbiscuits

My Brilliant Friend HBO series is one of the best things I've ever watched.
I really didn't like the book - have you read it? I've heard that unusually the TV series is better.
blue25 · 25/01/2021 19:41

Ritual
We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Panticus · 26/01/2021 09:37

Atonement by Ian McEwen
I'll also second The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje

Both great books and films

ritzbiscuits · 27/01/2021 22:16

@mamaduckbone Yes I've just finished the four books. I think the first book is hard as there are so many families and characters to get your head around, all with similar names!

Personally I'd get the first season on DVD/download and give it a go. It may spur you to go back to read them.
