What books for Christmas

What books did you get for Christmaor or buy yourself? I saw this book when I was browsing round Amazon. Sounded quite intriguing. Translated from Japanese. Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu kawaguchi. In a small back alley in Tokyo there is a cafe that's been there for 100 years. If you sit in a certain seat you can go back in time. Hope it's as good as it sounds.

I've used an amazon voucher to buy Finger Smith. I got the idea from a thread on here the other day about books with a big twist. I have high hopes 👍

GrettaGreen · 25/12/2020 14:07

I'm not long finished Finger Smith. It's a good book. DW got me Feminine Gospels by Carol Ann Duffy which I'm looking forward to with some Bailey's later.

Elderflower14 · 25/12/2020 14:10

I've asked for Vinnie Jones book from my sister and the new Victoria Wood biography from my nephew. My Mum's getting me Dan Walkers book of interviews.

bettxmascake · 25/12/2020 14:18

I bought myself The Address Book, The Shark and the Albatross and The Age of Islands which have been on my wish list for a while and all dropped in price.

Peridot1 · 25/12/2020 14:18

I did well!

DH got me the new Nigella cookbook. Against his better judgement as I have many many cookbooks already.

Also got me the new Graham Norton.

DS got me Because of You by Dawn French and the Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. And he got Barack Obama’s new book between DH and I.

Love a nice pile of new books for Christmas!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/12/2020 14:22

I haven't received a single book.
Luckily I did an Amazon voucher which will be used on Kindle books.

ArhedisVarkenjaab · 25/12/2020 15:46

The Decameron and The Left Hand Of Darkness. Bought myself. Hope to start later once DD asleep. Am completely excited about it.

blowinahoolie · 25/12/2020 16:59

Ian Rankin's Tooth and Nail, and Hide and Seek.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 25/12/2020 17:01

Autobiographies of Obama and of Kamala Harris. Massive US politics geek so I'm thrilled!

Taswama · 25/12/2020 18:01

I got Ruth Bader Ginsburg biography, GB84, The looming tower, Letters to my younger self, Murder on Christmas Eve, In the ditch and two novels in German. Almost all as specifically requested by me.
Really got back into the reading habit this year.

Elderflower14 · 25/12/2020 18:31

I also got Captain Tom's book!

EwwSprouts · 25/12/2020 18:54

DB gave me The Thursday Murder Club and I bought the latest by Sara Paretsky for DH to give me as he's hopeless at choosing.

Talking Japanese novels I bought Ddad one for the first time - the Honjin Murders.

Before the Coffee gets Cold in on my TBR pile, I've read a few Japanese novels this year and loved them all.

For Christmas I have a relatively disappointing Jólabókaflóð:
Christmas Days by Jeanette Winterson
If Not, Winter: Fragments Of Sappho by Anne Carson
A Maigret Christmas: And Other Stories by Georges Simenon
Difficult Women: A History of Feminism in 11 Fights by Helen Lewis

All good but I gould have done with more! Luckily I have a good amount on my Waterstones card so will be having a visit there soon to add to my TBR pile.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 26/12/2020 11:37

I got £100 of vouchers. I know Amazon is frowned upon here but I have a Kindle where I do most of my fiction reading these days.

I have just ordered the final instalment of Louis de Berniere’s trilogy and once I’ve finished my current book I am going to start from the beginning.

I’m signed up to BookBub and generally look out for things on my daily email so this voucher could go a long way.

I was planning The Empire of Things by Frank Trentmann but am contemplating audiobook.

Now off to indulge in all your gifts and books for ideas.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 26/12/2020 11:39

Oh The Thursday Murder Club. I’m going to need that. I might get a hard copy and leave it lying about for DS1.

What books for Christmas
CorianderQueen · 29/12/2020 12:04

Nothing. Not a single person got me a book - considering how much I read I was very sad.

Got five mugs though 🙄

missyB1 · 29/12/2020 12:20

Coriander buy yourself some books as a new year present!
