Longstanding MNer with a name change for obvious reasons. I worked on this book this summer, it's a really fun and interesting read and very timely. Great for book clubs, short and loads to discuss. www.amazon.com/Trumpspeak-B%C3%A9reng%C3%A8re-Viennot/dp/1940625432/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&s=books&keywords=trumpspeak&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1602014897&sr=1-1

Will you be writing books about other famous people dialects?

Bumbl · 08/10/2020 12:56

I like the look of this! I have read a couple of articles about the difficulties of translating Trump into French, as the French translators felt that even if they translated faithfully, it made them look bad - because the language he used was so poor.

notafanoftheman · 08/10/2020 13:55

@windolene haha no, no plans. @bumbl, yes that was probably the same woman. It’s an interesting question.

This looks fascinating!

Thanks theflying19, it was fun to work on!

That looks brilliant!

Do you think he'll win again? Sad

orchidsonabudget · 11/10/2020 11:52

How do you translate covfefe into French?

notafanoftheman · 11/10/2020 16:25

Do I think he will win again? Frankly no. I fucking hope not anyway, not that Biden fills me with hope and inspiration.

La covfefe.

La covfefe Grin You missed a truck there though - should have said, buy the book and find out.

Are you still translating him now? Have you noticed a deterioration in coherence or... I don't know, overall grasp of reality?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/10/2020 18:21

*Missed a TRICK! FFS...

notafanoftheman · 11/10/2020 18:57

Buy the book and find out ;-) but yes there is evidence of a deterioration in mental capacity.

Ahh, walked right into that GrinGrin Touché.

Is there any one particular tweet or comment that made your jaw hit the floor, or is it more like a constant low-level fever dream?

Have you ever met him? If so what was it like?

Btw I wonder if it's worth asking for this to be moved to aibu or ama - not many people seem to visit What We're Reading.

notafanoftheman · 11/10/2020 20:05

Just constant gobsmackedness really. The windmills speech was a particular WTF moment I guess. I’ve put feelers out re. a webchat, we will see if it happens.

notafanoftheman · 11/10/2020 20:05

No not met him personally! Not ever likely to!

Just googled it as I hadn't heard of the Windmills speech. Really don't know what to say! Here's some extracts for everyone to 'enjoy'. (I like that he ended on a positive note. That's the mark of a true statesman Grin)

“I never understood wind. You know, I know windmills very much. They’re noisy. They kill the birds. You want to see a bird graveyard? Go under a windmill someday. You’ll see more birds than you’ve ever seen in your life.

They’re made in China and Germany mostly. But they’re manufactured tremendous if you’re into this, tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything.

You talk about the carbon footprint, fumes are spewing into the air, right? Spewing. Whether it’s in China, Germany, it’s going into the air. It’s our air, their air, everything, right?

You see all those [windmills]. They’re all different shades of color. They’re like sort of white, but one is like an orange-white. It’s my favorite color, orange.”
