Any french readers out there?

My son is coming up for his 18th birthday and I'd like to get him a couple of books in french. He just finished his french A level and was really taken with the language (though he's off to do Maths at uni).

I'd like to get him some cool bestsellers in french. Maybe modern day, or about young people, or crime/mystery, or funny. Something an intelligent student might read. Any suggestions?

Les Choses Humaines by Karine Tuil was voted best novel by the lycée students of France last year.. An interesting story about consent and the choices made by a young student.

or thrillers by Guillaume Musso are very popular, fairly
well written...

I'm reading the Maigret series by Georges Simenon. Available on Kindle. They are old fashioned, but enjoyable.

If he likes detective fiction, Fred Vargas is quite good.

Michel Bussi writes brilliant stand alone crime/thriller novels.

The Harlen Coban books are pretty readable in French.

Following. I have read a Guillaume Musso and a Michel Bussi and liked them.

Two funny writers and good reads.

Daniel Pennac, especially the series about la famille Malaussene.

Didier van Cauwelaert's Un Aller Simple.

Just remembered the Vernon Subutex series by Virginie Despentes.

I found it quite hard going as there's a lot of slang, but my friend's French son in law loves them.
