The Fairacre series by Miss Read. The main character is headteacher at a village school who happily lives alone. They are gentle stories written in the 1960s.

The ones I keep recommending :-) Folly by Laurie King and The Bone People by Keri Hulme.

The Shell Seekers? Only one character doesn't live alone and she's horrible and miserable Grin I love the detail of things people do to enjoy their own space in it. Hideously dated now but still a book I can't put down if I'm in the mood for it.
