I’m looking for a good haunted house book for a 15 yr old who likes to be scared. Grateful for any recommendations.

Go for the absolute classic haunted house story - The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson. That should scare the pants off him in a classic 1977 way.

@DeeplyMovingExperience thank you for that but that’s the book that’s got him into wanting more haunted house books!
I was also thinking of The Shining but hoping others may have some good recommendations.

Slade House by David Mitchell but probably not scary enough.

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

Oh Shirley Jackson! Haunting of Hill House.

Sammilouwho · 28/07/2020 09:11

The turn of the screw by Henry James! Very much along the lines of the haunting of hill house (and what the second Netflix season is based on and what the film the others is based on)

Not haunted house, but how about The Rats by James Herbert? Another 70s classic horror with graphic depictions of hideous rat-themed mutilation! Then of course Carrie by Stephen King (lots of great horror stories from SK). The Omen is great too.

The Elementals.

Salem's Lot.

Dracula? I read it at that age and loved it. Not quite haunted house but quite scary.

CoralReefer · 28/07/2020 19:39

He’s read Dracula, The Woman in Black and The Omen. Great suggestions though.
I chose Haunting of Hill House. I have some of the others already.
The Elementals looks good too. Thanks for the James Herbert reminder. I bought a couple of his books as well.

I'm currently reading Rawblood by Catriona Ward which certainly has "haunted house" elements, is scary and so far very good.

However, it does have instances of unpleasant things happening to animals (in addition to a "curse" which affects people). If this may upset your teen then please avoid. I hope to finish tonight, so will update if further content warnings are required.

As mentioned upthread, Slade House is wonderful! Nor particularly scary, but a very good read Smile. I read The Rats as a teenager, and was terrified, but it cemented an appreciation of good horror Wink

This House is Haunted by John Boyne is good.

‘The Beckoning Fair One’ by Oliver Onions.
