Anyone read How We Disappeared and want to discuss the ending with me ( spoilers) ?

Just that really - finished it and loved it ( though ‘loved’ is a strange word as parts are horrifying). Would like to discuss the ending with someone who’s read it.

@LaBelleSauvage123 - yes please! I’m confused. I’m guessing the trauma means that she thought about all 3 endings?? I also thought that a good DNA test could be really useful if the baby survived!

Did really enjoy the book...although when she was taken away initially I did put the book to one side for a few weeks as it just seemed too awful. Now I’m glad I’ve read it so I know that piece of history.

So much SHAME and poverty in the book, that really stood out for me. I now want to find out more about this period.

As a parent I thought having the 12 year old supervise the recordings of her story was wrong. I’m not sure what a good age would have been.

What did you think overall?

I loved it - it was a powerful insight into a world that I knew nothing about previously. I think your analysis of the ending is probably right - but I want to know what ‘really’ happened!

I also want to know the ending, fiction though it is! Seeing as we never read about her looking for her child I’m thinking she fantasised about leaving him in a safe place.

She would have felt immense guilt -on top of all the other shame -I think at disowning him at the hospital...

He was also ill so him dying isn’t out of the question seeing as Wang Di was barely eating.

But - in the info about the author she says they’re still looking for the child... which missing child?!

I need to know!

I loved this book too. I was in tears by page 10, possibly everything hit home because I’m very familiar with some of the places and it’s shocking to think that in the scheme of things it’s all recent history. I know people who lived through all this.
I can’t remember the exact details but remember thinking it all made sense? I think her baby died?
