I really want to read something that is going to scare me silly. Any recommendations please?

Erebus by Shaun Hutson is a "straightforward horror" and scared me to death! I couldn't even look at the cover Grin

Anything by Jean Christophe Grangé, lots are in English, some must in French.

The first I read about negative near death experiences I couldn't find a 'safe' place to stop reading until nearly 3am.

His imagination is really tortured.

Thank you! I totally forget I'd posted this...its been a long lockdown 😂

Salem's Lot, by Stephen King.

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

Longlockdown · 10/05/2020 16:39

The Shining, Stephen King

They're excellent recommendations but I've read them all unfortunately.
I'm really struggling to find something that fits the bill!

Came on here to say Dark Matter but someone beat me to it. Just excellent and so vivid and terrifying. I couldn’t sleep!

Asthenia · 02/06/2020 21:36

Just seen you’ve read OP - I know Michelle Paver has written two others called Thin Air and Wakenhyrst which I haven’t read but have heard are very good

Justjoinedforthis · 02/06/2020 21:37

Someone on here recommended House of Leaves, and it scared me so much I had anxiety dreams, was scared in the dark feeding my baby in the night, and I still can’t quite stop thinking about it. I am not usually so pathetic but this book really scared the shit out of me!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/06/2020 21:39

Wakenhyrst is great, but it’s not scary like Dark Matter.

Naomi's Room by Jonathan Aycliffe

hagsrus0 · 02/06/2020 21:46

Parasite and/or Incarnate by Ramsey Campbell (old ones, don't care so much for more recent but YMMV)

Non-supernatural - practically anything by Stuart MacBride

MaccaPacca81 · 02/06/2020 22:01

Early Clive Barker really is some excellent horror.

The damnation game
Books of blood
Hellbound heart

The terror by Dan Simmons has a sense of dread weaved through the whole thing.

Stephen kings scariest imo...

IT
Pet semetary
The shining & doctor sleep

HP Lovecraft

I also found The Historian very scary, it's more the atmosphere though.

DisobedientHamster · 26/06/2020 21:50

Heart-Shaped Box.

Ashard20 · 26/06/2020 21:54

Starve Acre - Andrew Hurley
The Coldwater Haunting - Michael Richan

I second Dark Matter and Thin Air by Michelle Paver.
