Just finished it and couldn't put it down, thought it was brilliant. Very uncomfortable reading at times and thought provoking.

TomNook · 24/04/2020 17:09

It’s amazing. I didn’t find the seduction “upsetting”. Just a bit grim I suppose. Lots of us have had ropey sex with people our own age, so can relate to parts

Have just ordered this from amazon. After being highly recommended by a couple of friends I am quite excited to read it.

Shoxfordian · 30/04/2020 06:00

I really liked it, thought it was well written although obviously a fairly dark storyline

NorthernGravy · 01/05/2020 23:19

I’m 1/4 of the way through it and enjoying it but finding it very uncomfortable at times too.

Carolduckingbaskin · 02/05/2020 16:58

I thought it was very clever - the insidious nature of grooming - and the long term effect that it has on the loan character are handled well I think.

CagedBirdwithoutAKey · 22/07/2020 15:29

Absolutely loved it; best book I've read in a long time.

I decided to start 'Excavation' by Wendy C Ortiz after this one (still reading atm). Wendy actually experienced this irl, with her then English teacher too.

CocoBryceDidAcidWithMe · 09/08/2020 02:16

I haven't read it yet but really want to it looks so good an everyone's talking about it

bettsbattenburg · 09/08/2020 08:55

I'm about to start it.

HollowTalk · 15/09/2020 16:46

I'm so glad everyone liked this book. I really did, too, but there was something in it that I didn't understand - trouble is, I don't want to put a spoiler here in case someone who hasn't read the book reads the thread.

I know there are other books that cover this topic but that's inevitable, given the widespread use of grooming of school girls. I thought this book was very well written and showed the impact of grooming on a person throughout her life, not just at the time it's happening. It's so so sad to think of Vanessa, a bright working class girl with a scholarship to a school that should have opened doors for her into university and great professional jobs, living a kind of half-life because of that utter utter bastard.

RozHuntleysStump · 15/09/2020 16:49

It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. I think I might buy a hardback version.

HollowTalk · 15/09/2020 17:35

@RozHuntleysStump Do you mind if I PM you? There's something I want to ask about it but don't want to include a spoiler here.

HollowTalk · 15/09/2020 17:36

And I completely agree with you about how good it is. This is a really interesting interview with the author.

Sure x

George441 · 15/09/2020 21:05

Listening to you, it seems that this is an interesting book. I think I should read this book

slipperyeel · 16/09/2020 12:17

Brilliant book, very uncomfortable and very very good on the long term impacts of abuse

BletheringHeights · 22/09/2020 11:37

I loved it too.

eddiemairswife · 28/09/2020 12:57

Sorry to agree with so many of you; I found it tedious and far too long.

IwishIwasyoda · 17/11/2020 09:52

I thought it was interesting and thought provoking but I didn't find it particularly well-written. I have read 'The End of Alice' by AM Homes which is even more disturbing / dark / difficult IMO

WithIcePlease · 17/11/2020 14:09

The end of Alice was so disturbing I actually hid it somewhere when I'd finished it so DD's didn't pick it up

IwishIwasyoda · 17/11/2020 16:24

@WithIcePlease
Thankfully mine was a library copy so I didn't have to do this but yes, I would've done the same

Magicbabywaves · 18/11/2020 06:42

I listened to this on audible and whilst I thought it very well written, it really was bringing me down. That first scene of ‘sex’ was utterly miserable to listen to and I ended up skipping out the middle. I wanted to know what happened, but also didn’t.

Tootshoots · 28/10/2021 15:51

SPOILER

Just finished the book, I enjoyed it but the main question I have is in regards to Taylor, did he just touch her knee? Is that really all he did or was there more and she just wouldn't say? This just confuses me
